Wireless, handheld whole-body US scanner
The scanner, called Clarius PAL HD3, was recently announced a week ago. The device is as compact as an iphone, works seamlessly across iOS and Android devices. Combining both phased and linear arrays on a single head, it offers real-time imaging of both superficial and deep anatomy while offering portability.
I see more and more wireless, portable ultrasounds coming up in the market. I remember reading an article about how ultrasound will eventually replace the stethoscope. Interesting perspective. I believe more can be done to improve the capabilities of stethoscopes by incorporating digital technologies. Recent innovations I’ve seen are adding features such as Active Noise Cancelling (ANC), and removing the clunky stethoscope wires altogether, and transfering audio data by bluetooth directly to a mobile device (like the Thinklabs One digital stethoscope). I also see portable ultrasound to only improve further and be much more affordable as time passes. There are also startups and companies developing an all-in-one vitals “patch” solution that records everything from EKG, HR, RR, etc. These are exciting as well. Some are short-term innovations, while projects like the skin patches are more geared for long term, major innovations. I see opportunities for growth in both sides, and am excited for what’s to come!
